Lecture 1 : Basics of Graph Theory

چکیده

Graphs are the central objects to study during our course. The concept of graphs is simple but it has found very wide application. It can be used to model many real-world networks, such as the internet. This is a “pure mathematics” module, and hence we will focus on the mathematical theory of graphs, rather than on the applications. Informally, a graph is a collection of points (called “vertices”), together with a collection of lines (called “edges”) which join some pairs of points.

Nonperturbative Quantum Field Theory on the Lattice

These lectures provide an introduction to lattice methods for nonperturbative studies of quantum field theories, with an emphasis on Quantum Chromodynamics. Lecture 1 (Ch. 2): gauge field basics; lecture 2 (Ch. 3): Abelian duality with a lattice regulator; (Ch. 4) simple lattice intuition; lecture 3 (Ch. 5): standard methods (and results) for hadron spectroscopy; lecture 4 (Ch. 6): bare actions...

Groups Definable in O-minimal Structures

In this series of lectures, we will a) introduce the basics of ominimality, b) describe the manifold topology of groups definable in o-minimal structures, and c) present a structure theorem for the special case of semi-linear groups, exemplifying their relation with real Lie groups. The structure of these lectures is as follows: (1) Basics of o-minimality: definition, Cell Decomposition Theorem...

Random Graphs and the Probabilistic Method

These notes accompany a lecture given in the summer of 2006 at the Center for Combinatorics at Nankai University. They are provided as a reference (and especially bibliography) for students new to the probabilistic method. The goal in these notes is twofold. First we wish to demonstrate the basics of the probabilistic method, covering both the expectation and second moment applications. Second,...

Representation Theory , Lecture 0

The aim of this lecture is to recall some standard basic things about the representation theory of finite dimensional algebras and finite groups. First, we recall restriction, induction and coinduction functors. Then we recall the Schur lemma and deduce consequences about the action of the center and the structure of completely reducible representations. Then we explain the structure and repres...
